12. Planes on the ground

If a plane crashes into the ground and was falling at a rate over one level per hex it crashes in the hex it lands in. If it crashes into a battery the battery is destroyed.

If it crashes into the base of a balloon, the balloon is removed. If it crashes into a structure roll as if collision with a structure (see Table 11).

If a plane crashes into the ground and was dropping at a rate of one level per hex or less it may travel three hexes before it stops. Roll on the table below for each hex entered. A plane that voluntarily attempts a controlled landing* has a minus one modifier applied to the die roll.

TABLE 12.1 Crash landing results (d10)

Roll  Result
1 - 3  No Damage
4, 5  Minor damage - Roll one critical hit
6, 7  Severe damage - Roll two critical hits (lose any modifiers)
Major damage - Roll three critical hits (lose any modifiers)
9, 10  Plane destroyed

*A controlled landing is one in which there is a pilot and before contact with the ground the plane flew straight for three hexes and dropped no more than two levels in that time. The player must state the attempt at the beginning of the turn.

During a crash landing if a plane collides with a battery or balloon base then both the plane and battery or balloon are destroyed. If a plane crashes into an object during its slide the plane stops and is destroyed. If there is a blast wall the structure remains intact and the plane is destroyed in the hex prior to the blast wall. If no blast wall roll d10 for damage to the structure:

TABLE 12.2 Crash Landing into a Structure (d10)

Roll  Result
1 - 7 No damage to structure
8 - 10 Structure destroyed and explosion
Modify: +3 if fuel structure +2 if bombs on plane
